Chow Chow’s are intelligent, according to Dog Time.  They are reserved, perhaps even aloof.

What are Chow Chows like?

Chow Chows are independent and dignified.  Chows mind their own business and do not start trouble.  He will let strangers touch him only if they are introduced by their owners.  A formal dog!  Otherwise, he is not interested in strangers, unless they approach his home without his owners’ invitation. Then a Chow will challenge the stranger.  It is important to socialize the Chow extensively when he’s a puppy.

Chow Chow’s are homebody.  They are not likely to wander off when they are outside in the yard.  Still it is a good idea to have a fence so he is protected from traffic, as well as preventing strangers from approaching him when you are not around.

Chows do not do well in hot weather, so make sure they are in comfortable temperature when it’s hot outside.  Adults need to walk a couple of times a day for 15 minutes, or maybe one longer walk.  If Chows are socialized and trained well as a puppy can get along with cats and other dogs, especially if they are introduced when the Chow is a puppy.  If you are looking for a dog that likes to cuddle, this may not be the dog for you.  You can read more about Chow Chow’s here.
