It is fun to watch a dog doze off. The way they are nodding, and yet refuse to go to bed. There’s something sweet about that. That’s what the Maltese is doing in this video. The sound of the television is lulling him to sleep. Watch how graceful he looks even when nodding off to dreamland. And no wonder he has that elegance. The Maltese have been thought of as the aristocrat of the dog world, along with their relatives, the Maltese Terrier, the Maltese Spaniel, and a few others. They were known as “the dog of Malta” at one point.

What is a Maltese like?

The Greeks built tombs to honor their Maltese when their beloved pets departed. The Maltese is known for being gentle, yet spirited. Many small dogs have been bred down to their size, but the Maltese have always started this small, according to Pet Wave. Even though they are small, they are sturdy and play yard. They can keep up with dogs twice their size.

Dog and cat reversible jacket waterproof

The Maltese has a unique character. They have the gentlest manners of small dogs. They are fearless. They trust you and they are affectionate. Perhaps these are reasons why they have always been a companion dog.

How to train a Maltese

The Maltese is very trainable. They are eager to please, unlike other toy breeds. Praise them and give them yummy treats, and they’ll be happy to learn whatever you’d like. They have an independent spirit, so keep the training interesting, so it does not become a boring routine for them. The best way to train a Maltese is to reward good behavior and ignore the bad behavior.

Maltese is no stranger to separation anxiety. They adore their people and hate to be left alone by themselves for too long. Exercise can help. In fact, some Toy breed owners think their dogs don’t need exercise. They do. It’s best to match a Maltese with a family who has a stay at home parent, so it has a constant companion.

With all the TV noise in the background, this sweet Maltese is dozing off, with one ear perked up, as if trying to keep up with what’s going on, or simply bothered by the noise. At different points of the TV program, the dialogue sound a bit monotone. It was working like a lullaby to this sweet dog. Many people do fall in front of the TV, not because the program is boring, but probably because the dialogue is at a soothing pace. Dogs can also be soothed by a monotone rhythm in sound.

Characteristics of Maltese

Dog and cat reversible jacket waterproof

Maltese are bred as companion dogs. Their purpose in life is to love and be loved. The Maltese knows the secret to youth: they keep a puppy attitude throughout their life. Equivalent to our “staying childlike”. The Maltese originates from Malta some 2000 years ago, and has always been a companion dog, according to Vet Street. Even though they are cuddle buddies and it’s tempting to carry them around in your arms or your purse, they do need their exercise.

And they love to learn new skills. They enjoy showing off what they learn. So let them. Maltese is a dog that requires maintenance. Their coat needs regular care, otherwise they get tangled and matted. To keep them looking show dog gorgeous, you might invest in professional grooming. Don’t those button eyes look stunning against their white hair? It takes a lot of time to clean away those tear stains, which can have a discoloration, which is harmless. Maltese is a wonderful pet for many. It probably is better not to match them with families with very young children because being so tiny, it is easy to injure them if children play too rough with them. Or if they were frightened or hurt, they might snap at a child in self-defense.

Enjoy watching this sweet Maltese doze off to the sound of television. If you like Maltese, here’s another video of a Maltese named Milo.
