What is a Maltese like?

Maltese is a Toy breed.  Even though they get along with everyone, they are best not matched with families with very young children.  It’s very easy for a young child to flop down on a bed without checking first if the Maltese is lying under the blanket.  And if the Maltese decides to jump down from your arms or from the back of a sofa, that can injure him seriously.

Maltese needs your company

They don’t like to be left alone for more than a few hours at a time.  And if they do, they can bark a lot or chew on things you don’t want them to chew on.  If you are away from home a lot, the people loving Maltese may not be the best choice.

And if you have a fenced yard, you have to make sure that the little Maltese cannot wiggle through the fence and escape.  This breed also tends to alert you to every new sight and sound.  It’s wise to train them as early as possible to stop barking immediately when you ask them to.  If you live in a noise-restricted building, and you are away from home, this is something to consider before bringing home a Maltese.
