When to introduce puppies to their father

Jane Williams wrote in Pets.TheNest that unless the father and mother grew up in the same house, it is a good idea to have the mother and puppies in their own enclosure for about a month because the pups’ first 2 weeks are completely dependent on mom, as they can’t see or hear yet, and Mom needs to devote her entire attention to caring for the pups.

It is possible that her maternal instincts during this critical time of nurturing to not even want their father to interact at all with the pups, perhaps for their safety.

The male parent may not be interested in the puppies once they are born.  Even if they want to go near the pups, Mom may discourage it because of her protective instinct.  Mom may allow Dad to help if they grow up together.  Around week 4, the puppies start to wean and explore their world.  When they start socializing, that’s a good time to gently introduce them to Dad, but always supervised because Dad may not like the nipping and yipping of the little ones.  Let Dad sniff the puppies and become familiar with their scent.  If Dad starts getting anxious, step in immediately.  You can read more about this topic here.
