The Sharpei’s coats

According to Your Pure Bred Puppy, Sharpei’s have 3 variety of coats.  One is called “horse” coat.  It’s short and prickly, and can irritate people with sensitive skin.  If a Sharpei has a “brush” coat, it is thicker.  About 1 inch long.  Those who have a “bear” coat has a heavy coat like the Chow Chow.  All Sharpei’s shed.  Those with a brush coat or a bear coat shed the most.

Characteristics of a Sharpei

A Sharpei’s nature is calm and confident. They like to be clean naturally, so they are easy to housebreak. They don’t bark much, and only need moderate exercise. They are very loyal to their family.

When it comes to strangers, they are very protective and can get suspicious.  It is important to socialize them when they are puppies.  Let them hang around good people, so they know that feels like.  Then if they meet a stranger that deserves their suspicion, they would recognize the difference.  

What kind of family is ideal for a Sharpei?

Unusual and cute looking as these puppies are, Sharpei’s are probably not for the first time dog owner, according to Michele Welton on Your Pure Bred Puppy.  Here are some helpful information if you are thinking about getting a Sharpei.   If you are able to establish a relationship where you admire their spirit of independence, and have them respect your house rules (based on consistency–YOUR consistent reinforcement of your house rules), then you’re golden.

Characteristics of a Sharpei

Sharpei’s are naturally clean, so they are easy to housebreak.  They need a moderate amount of exercise, so several short walks a day would be good.  Because of their moderate need for exercise, they can live in the city or in the country.  However, if you have a yard, make sure it is a well-fenced yard because Sharpei’s have strong hunting instinct.  If they see a deer or some livestock running by, there is a chance they will dash off and chase after them.

If you are thinking about getting a Sharpei, know that this snorting is part of life, and snoring too.  If this is the first time you get a dog, Sharpei probably would not be the recommendation, according to Michele Welton on Your Pure Bred Puppy.  This is a confident, strong-willed, dominant dog.  Someone already experienced with training a dog by being consistent, respectful of a dog’s independence, while earning the dog’s respect, would do better with a Sharpei.

This breed certainly has a unique look.  They don’t bark much.  They need only moderate exercise.  They are naturally clean, so housebreaking would be easy.  It’s important to socialize a Sharpei early because his territorial instincts are strong.  Expose them early on to different people, so they get a feel of what good guys feel like.  This way, he won’t be suspicious of all strangers when he grows up.
