The Lhasa Apso is a most special dog.  Its history is fascinating.  This dog is named after the sacred city of Lhasa in Tibet, according to Small Dog Place.  They served as watchdogs for monasteries.  If any intruder managed to sneak past the guards, he won’t get past the Lhasa Apso.  This furry guard will warn the residents.  Lhasa Apsos are very good at their job, that’s how they earned their reputation as guard dog for the monasteries.

Why do dogs snore?

So why do dogs snore?  Mary Jo Dilornado writes in Mother Nature Network that there can be a number of reasons why our dogs snore.   One of them is their sleeping positions.

How dogs’ sleeping positions affect snoring

Dogs that like to sleep on their backs are more likely to snore than dogs who sleep all curled up or who sleep on their stomach.  Another possible reason is that dogs can also get colds like humans.  That can lead to snoring.  Just like us, dogs need their beauty sleep to feel great.  If their snoring is waking them up, and they are not getting the deep sleep they need, it’s a good idea to consult a vet.

Dogs with short nose are more likely to snore

Dogs who have a short nose, such as Pugs, Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, are more likely to snore because of their anatomy.  They have shorter air passages than other dogs and have to “work” harder to breathe.

Dogs can snore because of allergies

Another reason for snoring is that dogs can have allergies like we do.  For example, dust, pollens, perfume, another pet.  These can cause air way to constrict and they snore.  Or it could be something as simple as getting something stuck in their nose or throat, maybe part of a pine cone they played with on their walk, or maybe part of their favorite toy.  Sometimes our friends are not very discriminate on what they can swallow.   You can read more about this topic here.

Squeaky toys can entertain dogs for quite a while.  A friend’s dog likes to play with his squeaky toy even while they are watching television, so they put the squeaky toy up high where he can’t reach but can see it. Their dog whines.  Then they found an ultrasonic squeaky toy.  Only dogs can hear the sound, so his parents can watch television in peace.  For some reason, their dog chewed up that ultrasonic toy in a day.  So, back to square one.

How to choose toys that are safe for your dogs

Some dogs really like their stuffed animals.  Some like to sleep with their toy.  Perhaps it’s their version of having a teddy bear or a doll.  If you buy stuffed toys for your dog that are not specifically made for dogs, please make sure that you remove parts that they can easily swallow–like buttons used for eyes or nose.  Those little parts can get caught in their throat.  Especially if you have a tiny dog–that could be dangerous.

And if the stuffed toy can be easily torn apart, be sure that the material that stuffs the toy is not harmful, in case your dog decides to eat the foam.

If you have ever been interested in enrolling your dog in agility, and perhaps to be in shows, there are some questions to ask before you make the decision, according to Animal Planet.  The article includes some excellent tips.   For example, is your dog’s body structure conducive to agility.  There’s going to be a lot of running and jumping, and it’s fairly fast-paced.  A Bulldog’s body structure would probably not appreciate this kind of strain on his body.  In fact, those moves could cause problems on his joints.

Is Agility training suitable for your dog?

Other questions to ask yourself is:  Does your dog enjoy running?  Does she get along with other dogs? There are going to be lots of dogs around her in classes and shows.   Can she focus on you for direction?  Or is she easily distracted by anything remotely interesting?

If you are not completely certain of these answers, you can enroll your dog in a beginning agility class.  That will give you a clearer picture.

Now, the next set of questions is about you. Do you like to run?  Or are you enrolling your dog in agility for the purpose of deeper bonding with her? You might be doing just as much running as your dog.

However, if your answer is:  Yes, my dog will enjoy agility based on my observations.  Yes, I want to be involved with this, and no, I don’t enjoy running, you can still participate.

Just seek out an instructor or a group who can guide you in the art of agility distance control.  This is where your dog does the running, you do the navigating, but you can do it from a distance, so you don’t need to do the heavy-duty running.  You can read about other tips here.

It wasn’t that long ago that many believe dogs take care of their own teeth.  Actually, infection from lack of dental care can affect their heart and liver.  Missing teeth makes it harder to eat.  So it does affect their quality of life.

How to introduce teeth brushing to Poodles

All Poodle Info offers some detailed tips on how to introduce dental care to your puppy or adult Poodle.  Start when they are 2 months old.  Set aside a regular “teeth” time, so they come to expect it.  You might schedule a walk or playtime afterwards so they associate dental care with fun.

Put your Poodle on your lap, tummy up, your legs supporting their head.  With your left thumb, gently keep their mouth open, with your right hand, touch each of their teeth, for a total of 1-2 minutes.  This gets them used to having their teeth touched.  They may wiggle more at the beginning.  But in time, they’ll wiggle less.  They’ll give up and allow you to touch their teeth.

When this happens, you can introduce doggie toothpaste.  Not human toothpaste because it is toxic to dogs.  They cannot spit out the paste like we can, so they swallow it.  But doggie toothpaste, even though we wipe off the paste afterwards, is not harmful even if they swallow.  Besides, dogs like the meat flavored doggie toothpaste.

Use just a dollop of canine toothpaste and gently rub it on each tooth with your finger.  Wipe with a soft, small damp cloth afterwards.  When they are used to this procedure, then you can start the brushing.  You can read more about dental care for Poodles here.

The cat seems to be quite maternal in caring for this puppy. He feels so safe and relaxed around his cat friend.  I’ve seen cats grooming themselves often, and was curious about cats grooming dogs, so I researched this topic.  An article in Pets Welcome shares that when cats groom another, one of the areas they are drawn to are the ears.  Why?

Why do cats like licking ears?

The earwax contains something of nutritional value for them.  Earwax contains fatty acids, a small amount of cholesterol, and dead skin cells. These are proteins.  Cats especially are drawn to the scent of animal proteins.  In the case of this cat, she keeps licking the head of the puppy, not the ears.  So she’s probably not after protein.

There are other reasons cats lick others too.  They lick to spread a community scent to show that they are part of a pack.  They will even lick their human. Mama cats will groom their kittens not only to keep them clean, but to help their digestion as well as to spread that community scent.  And kittens will lick their mothers to show respect, particularly if they are licking their muzzle and head.

Another puppy plays tether ball all by himself.  This is actually a very perfect way for Corgis to entertain themselves.  This is an active breed who were once cattle herders.  They need lots of exercise.  So if you have activities that engage both physical exercise and mental stimulation, that would be a perfect combination to keep your Corgi from getting bored and from getting overweight.   on their body, the easier it is on their spine.

How much exercise does a Corgi need?

For Corgis, potential weight gain is not just about maintaining a healthy body, but also to prevent back problems because Corgis have a long body.  The less weight they have to carry on their back, the easier it is on their spine.

Because Corgis  have an instinct to chase, dig, chew, retrieve, and herd, you can help them redirect their energy through exercise.  The puppies may need to ease into it while their bodies are developing.

Corgi Care suggests that they exercise at least 2 times a day.  The first one can last 45 to 60 minutes, and the second one 30 to 45 minutes.  Corgis need aerobics exercise. But if you have a couch potato, ease him gently into it so his body won’t get stressed out.

If you don’t have time to take them for the two outings, you might train your Corgi to use your treadmill.  In fact, there are treadmills for dogs.

If you have time to take him to a dog park where he can run leash-free, he would love that freedom and the opportunity to socialize with other dogs.  Make sure he is already trained to come to you on command before you take him to a leash-free area with other dogs.  You can read more about the exercise needs of Corgis here.
