In this video, Misa is already doing well even though it’s her first Agility session.  If you’ve watched her videos doing tricks, it’s understandable how those previous skills transition easily into Agility.  The tunnel is already part of Misa’s repertoire.  If you wonder whether your dog can do agility, there is some encouragement from Affordable Agility.   Your dog can do it just for fun, or he could take part in competition.

How to choose agility class that suits your dog

If you are starting your puppy in agility, there is an age requirement.  And for the jumps, make sure the jump height is really low.  Puppy joints are still developing, so you don’t want to stress them out or cause any injury.  Same for dogs that may be older.

Puppies’ attention span may be shorter, so keep the training short, or provide more variety.  Older dogs may tire sooner, so keep their sessions short.  Keep the jump height lower for older dogs also to accommodate their joints.

Before you consider entering your dogs in competition, tune in to your dogs’ needs and interest. Our dogs like to please us.  They would even push themselves to do something we are excited about.  Listen to your dogs’ needs first and foremost.   You don’t want them to push themselves that they hurt the next day, especially for an older dog.

And don’t worry about your dog’s size.  The smaller dogs have lower jump heights, lower table, and will be competing against others his size.
