What smart parents to take such care in introducing a new puppy to their French Bulldog.  They provide a safe space, and let the dogs take their time in getting to know each other.  No forcing of anyone to like another.   What these parents are doing will help their dogs have an easier transition while adjusting to each other.  The family dog is Ted.  The new puppy (also a French Bulldog) is Will.  Dad has Ted on a leash while Mom holds the puppy and calls Ted to come to her.  They let Ted sniff the puppy.  Then they had Ted stay in place (still on a leash) and bring the puppy to him. The puppy has his other interest, and after a few sniff, actually lost interest in Ted.

When the family get back home, they put the puppy in his own enclosed area so Ted can still see him but there is some protection for the puppy.  This will allow Ted to become accustomed to the puppy’s presence and scent while still having his territory for the time being.  I remember reading that it is a good idea to introduce a new dog to the family dog in a neutral location such as a park. This prevents the family dog from feeling like his territory is being invaded by the stranger.  Give them time to get acquainted, and at their own pace.  When they seem quite comfortable with each other, take them home in separate cars.   (Car can be territorial too.)

Be sure to give the family dog plenty of attention so he doesn’t think he’s being replaced.  At the beginning, have their interactions supervised to make sure everyone is safe.  Once they become friends, they can be left alone together.  Enjoy watching how these wise parents introduce a new puppy to their dog.
