I just read an article about natural remedies for doggie bad breath written by Morieka Johnson in Mother Nature Network.
She suggests that instead of masking the bad breath with mint and doggie mouthwash, to do the following:
- Wash food bowl and water bowl regularly. Bacteria can build up on plates.
- Change the water everyday. Dogs don’t just drink, they slurp, along with the pieces of grass and food in their mouth.
- Add high quality treats
- Brush their teeth regularly
Here’s an excerpt from her article:
Add high-quality treats: Dried sweet potato dog chews, cut up apples and chopped carrots clean teeth while fortifying to your dog’s diet. Remember, there may be a bit of trial and error involved, but most pooches will happily consume these goodies. When in doubt about a fruit or vegetable, check the ASPCA for a list of foods that are hazardous to dogs (such as avocados).
