Characteristics of a Corgi
Corgis are good with children, and are very active. So be sure you give them sufficient exercise to keep them healthy and fit–a long, daily walk. They have a tendency to be overweight, so exercising helps.
Corgis with a long back especially need to be careful of staying close to their ideal weight because the extra pounds could affect the health of their spine. Because of the design of their body, it’s easier on their joints if they can run on softer surfaces such as soft dirt or sand.
It’s in the instinct of Corgi’s to herd. So if they don’t have a herding job, they may herd their humans or other dogs to keep everyone together. Pembroke Corgi’s do bark, so it’s a good idea to train them early on to stop barking on command, especially if you live in an apartment or condo, where neighbors may complain. Corgi’s also shed. There’s always going to be hair in your home, on your clothes, in your car. And twice a year, their coat shed, so it’s heavy duty shedding a couple of times a year.
