The Shih Tzu puppy in this video is 5 months old at the time.  He is learning to greet with his paw.  It’s just lovely watching this cute, fluffy puppy learn a new skill.

Sometimes I wonder how dogs learn commands.  I imagine they recognize the sound, then associate it with an action that the trainer demonstrates to them.

Then there are times when dogs have not learned the words at all, or when someone speak to them in a language they have not heard before.  Yet they respond as expected.  How does that happen?

I remember a beagle-foxhound who grew up with only one language.   One day someone was visiting who spoke another language, and told him to come to her (without using any hand gesture.)  The dog went to her.  What happened?  Was it in the tone of voice and the expectation in the voice?  But without gesture, and not having heard that language, how was the dog able to understand the content?  Just wondering…
