[VIDEO] These Corgi Puppies Are Light Sleepers

Don’t these Corgi puppies look sweet in their sleep?   Actually, most of them are asleep.  One is not quite ready for bed, and keeps wanting a little more action.   But his parent is convincing, and soon the puppy drifts off like his siblings.

Listen to the noises in the background.  The puppies who are asleep did not even wake up, although we can see some subtle twitching.   It’s not always going to be like this.  Growing takes a lot of energy, so puppies need a lot of sleep–maybe 20 hours a day.  Once they are older, they are likely to be more easily waken.   There are reasons for this, according to the writers at Tuck.com

How much sleep do dogs need?

Like us, dogs go into the REM cycle in their sleep.  In nature, dogs need to be alert to protect their pack, so they can wake up easily.   It’s common that dogs wake up before finishing a full sleep cycle.   To make sure that they get enough REM sleep, they make up for it by sleeping more.

Some dogs sleep more than others, depending on their size, their age, their breed, how active they are, and how healthy they are, says Tuck.   The bigger the breed, the more sleep they need.  There’s a bigger load to carry around all day.

The more active they are, the less sleep they need.   The less active they are, the more sleep they need.    The average number of hours adult dogs sleep is from 12 to 14.  Again, this depends on how active they are and the other factors mentioned above.

If you notice that your dog has a significant change in sleep, or become lethargic, do get him checked to make sure it’s not a medical matter.   If a dog just loses someone, he can also sleep a lot more, or sleep less.    We would probably respond the same way.   It’s just a natural process.   If it goes on beyond a reasonable amount of time, do check with a vet.   You can read the entire article here.
