How do these dogs come up with these poses?   Some of the dogs in this video sleep in the weirdest positions.   They would make a funny calendar of dogs sleeping poses.   Some of them expose their belly.  They must be feeling very secure in their environment.   I’ve always been curious about what sleeping positions indicate about our dogs’ state of mind at the time.  I came across an article on Dogs.LoveToKnow that sheds some light on this topic.  This article share that dogs to go into a deep sleep, just as we do.  When they are lying on their back with all four paws up in the air, they are most relaxed.  Their exposed belly keeps them cool, and their muscles are relaxed in this position.  This is the position where a lot of humorous movements (to us anyway) happens–kicking, wagging tail, running feet.

When dogs are in a deep sleep, (or sleeping in general) do not wake them.  Some unknowing children startle sleeping dogs and get hurt.  When dogs curl up like a ball, they are just dozing.  They wake up very quickly in this position.  When dogs sleep back to back with another dog or with us, they are bonding.  It’s one way of showing affection.  And they feel safe protecting your back, and vice versa.   Whether dogs sleep inside or outside, make sure the temperature is comfortable for them.  Like us, they can get too warm or too cold.  While we sleep about 1/3 of our life, dogs sleep about 1/2 of theirs.  They need their beauty sleep.  It’s a good idea to know our dogs’ sleeping habits, and make sure they get the sleep they need.  You can read more about this topic here.
